This evening I went to the beach to try to take a few shots. On my way down to the beach I saw a small swarm of honey bees gathered on a post of the boardwalk. I didn’t have the best lens to capture them, since I was only equipped with my 24-70mm lens, meant for landscapes. So I got as close as I could and zoomed in to the maximum of 70mm to get this shot.

Swarm of honey bees

After taking a shot of the honeybees, I walked down to the beach to a spot that I had found the evening before. I noticed a board had washed up onto the beach among the rocks. I thought that this element would add interest into the image, so I set up my camera and photographed the group of rocks. To smooth out the water and to create a dreamy effect, I added a 4 stop 1.2 ND filter. The sun was setting behind me so there was a hint of color in the sky.

After I had taken the above shot, I decided to rotate the camera to photograph in a landscape orientation.

UPDATE: I went back the following evening to try to capture something a little different. I noticed that someone had killed the swarm of honeybees that were on the boardwalk. This was a bit upsetting since the honeybee population is in decline, but I also know that the swarm was on the boardwalk near where people would walk. Too bad that somebody couldn’t have contacted a bee keeper to properly remove them to a safe environment.
