Third Trip to the Everglades – February 2025
The Everglades sits on top of a porous limestone basin that allows much of the water to be retained within the aquifer. As plants slowly decay, they release weak acids that attack the rock to carve out these “solution holes”. Groundwater will fill the pockets creating an oasis for aquatic plants, insects, and frogs. This solution hole is one of the largest that I’ve seen and it is located on Research Road leading to the Nike Missile Site.

The Glowing Hole

I arrived just after a full moon to photograph this hole at night. I attached fishing line to green LED lights so I could retrieve them after I was finished, and placed them in the hole to make water glow. I’m not sure how much I like this shot or not, but it was just an experiment I wanted to try.

Long Pine Key Lake

The last time I attempted to photograph this lake there wasn’t a cloud in the sky. This time I was lucky enough to have a few clouds move over the lake as the sun was coming up. Although I love reflections I wanted to show the shore of the lake in the foreground.

Pine Glades Sunset

I wanted to try to photograph a sunset on the other side of Long Pine Key Lake. I realized that there weren’t going to be any clouds so I decided to drive to Pine Glades Lake to see if the view was going to be any better. I am glad I did! Most of the color was on the horizon at sunset, and this lake was a much better choice.

Days End in the Everglades

There was an alligator in the water and I heard him make a grunting noise as I was taking these pictures. If you look hard enough you can see him.

Last Light at Pine Glades Lake

This was the last image of the trip before heading home. I was very pleased to capture this sunset on such a beautiful lake. I will be going back again to the Everglades at the end of March. It really is a beautiful place!
